David Atkinson

Music Director – Core Artistic Team

David began studying music at the age of five in Ottawa with Hungarian- Canadian composer Gabor Finta and grew up performing classical piano at various prestigious venues, including Parliament Hill and the French, Slovakian and Hungarian Embassies. In 2004, David moved to Toronto to study jazz music at Humber College where he was able to work with jazz luminaries including Dave Holland and Dave Douglas. Since graduating David has been freelancing playing both piano and accordion, in styles ranging from music theatre (“Wicked”) to modern jazz (The Dirty Martinis), from rock/pop (Scott McCord and the Bonafide Truth) to world music (Tropicalia). In 2010 he won the Dora for Outstanding Original Sound Design/ Composition for his work on Keystone Theatreʼs first play “The Belle of Winnipeg”. Since then he has been a contract musician with DanCap Productions for their recent Toronto runs of “Jersey Boys” and “Westside Story”, and a music educator at Bishop Strachan School. Most recently David appeared in Elton Johnʼs ensemble at this yearʼs Fashion Cares Benefit, and can be seen on CBCʼs “Over the Rainbow” where he is the Associate Musical Director.
